Help: Image Search

Quick Search

A keyword Search field is located in the top-left corner of every Web page. Use the Search to:

  • do a quick keyword search of our entire collection.
  • search by entering the alpha-numeric image number (i.e. MAC123).
  • narrow search by image type (i.e. Caricatures, Illustrations, Political Cartoons etc.).

Advanced Image Search

Use the Advanced Image Search page to narrow your search and more accurately pinpoint the image you are seeking. You can browse for images, refine your keyword searches or search by image number. A link to this page can be found in the top menubar.

On the Advanced Image Search page you can:

  • browse our entire collection by image, subject, artist and date.
  • narrow your keyword searches using the criteria provided.
  • search by entering the alpha-numeric image number (i.e. MAC123).
Browse for Images

If you're not sure how to spell a name, or if you wish to see images grouped by type (such as all USA Political cartoons or all Illustrations), then browsing is great way to find the images you require. 'Browse for Images' is located near the bottom of the Advanced Search page. There, you will see four top-level categories listed. Choose the category (Image, Subject, Artist, Date) that seems most likely to contain what you require. When you browse within a category, you may be presented with subcategories that will further narrow your search.

Browse Images
This menu allows you to browse by image type (Caricature, Gag Cartoons, Political Cartoons etc.). Choosing an image type category will display all the images within that category. You may also be shown some further categories. These are subcategories that will further refine your search.

Browse Subjects
This menu lists available subjects (Automotive, Business, History, etc.). Upon choosing a subject, you will be presented with recent images from that subject category. You may also be shown further categories. These are subcategories that will further narrow your search.

Browse Artists
This menu lists available artists. Upon choosing an artist's name, you will be presented with the most recent images from that artist. You can continue to browse this artist's portfolio by subject.

Browse Dates
This menu allows you to search images by the date they were posted to the Web site. Choosing a month will display all the images within that month and the date they were posted. You may also be shown further categories. These are subcategories that will further narrow your search.

Keyword Search Tips

Using a Keyword Search is generally the fastest way to find an image, if you know its name or subject matter. Start your keyword search on the Advanced Image Search page, by entering a word or words, then making refinements using the criteria offered. Refinements will both narrow and speed your search. If you don't find a match, try browsing. What you're searching for may be listed by a different name.

The search will attempt to match all of the keywords entered. For example, if you typed "Dogs Cats", only the images that contain both words will be displayed.

Searches are not case sensitive
All searches ignore common words and punctuation. For example, if you searched, "The Wizard of Oz is a big guy!", the search will only look for "Wizard", "Oz", "big", and "guy". Leave spaces between multiple keywords. Don't use the words or, and or not.

If the search turns up no matches, it may attempt a phonetic match. Phonetic matching occurs if the exact word cannot be found in the database, so the search widens to include words that sound the same. While phonetic matching is helpful when you enter an incorrectly spelled word, the broadening of the search sometimes leads to words like "black" matching "Blair". If your keyword search returns non-relevant results, phonetic searching is probably the reason.

My search results turned up too few images:
If you don't find what you're looking for, try fewer keywords (i.e. "London" instead of "London England").

My search results turned up too many images:
Link to the Advanced Image Search page and narrow your search using the criteria provided. Be more specific (i.e. "London England" instead of "London").

Search by Image Number

If you know the alpha-numeric number (i.e. MAC123) of the image you wish to view, enter it in the field provided on the Advanced Image Search page and press "Search". If nothing comes up, it's best to browse the image categories.

The Download Zone

The front page of the Download Zone displays the most recent additions to the Web site. If you are in a rush for a topical image you can order one of these images by clicking on its title. Or you may do well to narrow the assortment of images by clicking on the Advanced Search link located in the top and side menubars.

It is not possible to purchase more than one image at a time in the Download Zone. If you wish to purchase two or more images, re-enter the Download Zone and repeat the download process for each image.
